The prefecture of Imathia that has the size of 1.700 km2  is one of the most important prefectures of Macedonia. The prefecture borders on the prefecture of Pella to the north, on the prefecture of Salonica to the east on Kozanis prefecture to the west and southwest and on Pierias prefecture to the west and southwest and on Pierias prefecture to the south and southeast. Mount Vermion (altitude 2.052 m) separates it from the Prefecture of Kozani. Pella and Thessalonica share the glory of a brilliant past with Imathia, since it was at Vergina where a complex of royal tombs were unearthed in 1977-78 in the present-day village. The largest of them belonged to Philip II, a smaller one to a young prince, perhaps Alexander, and the third - square in shape - to a woman. Mount Vermion is a very popular ski resort, having an excellent tourist infrastructure. There are two organised skiing centres: one at the site of Tria Pigadia and one at Selli. The ski installations and slopes at Selli and Tria-Pente Pigadia offer comfortable facilities to a multitude of guests. Moreover, there are facilities and trails for mountain climbing.
